Why pint ratings changed in 2019/2020 — and how to pick the right capacity by space size and moisture conditions.
Why ratings changed
In 2019, the U.S. Department of Energy updated the test for dehumidifiers. Portable units are now rated at 65°F (not the old 80°F), and efficiency moved to Integrated Energy Factor (IEF). That’s why a “50‑pint” today isn’t the same as yesterday’s “50‑pint.” Cooler air holds less moisture — so capacities look smaller under the new, more realistic test.
Quick sizing primer
- Start with space size and how damp it is.
- Under ~2,000 sq ft, ENERGY STAR bands run from 20–30 pints/day (slightly/moderately damp) up to 30–50 pints/day (wet).
- Basements and crawl spaces: when in doubt, size up.
